Brainy Careers

What do you want to be when you grow up? Maybe you want to be a doctor, an athlete, a teacher, a CEO, a chef…the list of possible jobs are endless. You could be anything and have time to figure out what your interests are!

Hopefully you have learned a lot about the brain in previous blog posts. Hopefully you want to learn even more about the brain. After all, it is a fascinating and complex organ that we are constantly learning more about. But, how does this relate to what you want to be when you get older? Well, this blog post will introduce you to some cool careers that work with the brain.

There are a variety of careers that focus on the brain. Here are some common ones.

One type of doctor who works with the brain is a psychiatrist. According to Study.com, psychiatrists help patients who have mental health conditions that affect their mind. Many different conditions originate in the brain. They can help by diagnosing patients and prescribing treatments.

There are also neurologists. Neurologists are a type of doctor. They diagnose and treat conditions related to the nervous system. As you might remember from the “Brain Highway” blog, the nervous system helps the brain communicate with the rest of the body. If there is a problem with this communication, a neurologist is there to help. Sometimes, they need the help of other doctors as well.

Neurosurgeons are another type of doctor. They might work closely with neurologists. Neurosurgeons are surgeons who are trained to do surgeries and procedures on the brain. They can help neurologists treat diseases by operating on them. Neurosurgeons need special skills because the brain is very fragile. This takes a lot of practice. This is why they, like other doctors, go through lots of school and training. They also need special tools to help them perform their job effectively.

Who makes these tools and devices that help these doctors? Biomedical engineers could do this. Biomedical engineering is a broad field of engineering that works on creating new technologies to improve the medical field. They could help neurologists by engineering imaging devices. Some of these imaging devices were talked about in a previous blog. They could help neurosurgeons by creating robots or other devices to help them in surgery. The biomedical engineering field rapidly changes as new discoveries are made and technology improves.

Neuroscientists help discover new information about the brain and nervous system. They are scientists who conduct research about the nervous system. They make fascinating discoveries and help us understand the brain more.

These are just a few of the many careers that focus on the brain. One day this could be you! You could be a doctor, an engineer, or scientist working with the brain every day. How cool would that be!
